Explore x Klimate

As part of our Climate Action Plan, we’ve partnered with Klimate, a climate-tech company founded on a simple idea: if businesses are going to invest in climate action, it should genuinely make a difference.

Klimate exists to scale high-quality, science-backed carbon removal solutions – not quick fixes or box-ticking offsets. Their work supports the development of innovative technologies that actively remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and store it for the long term.

What is carbon removal?

Carbon removal (sometimes called carbon sequestration) means taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and locking it away for decades or longer.

This can happen in a variety of ways, including:

Plants, trees and soil
Geological or ocean-based storage
Products created from captured CO₂
Waterfalls cascade gently into a serene, lush forest pool surrounded by dense greenery and towering trees, creating a tranquil and picturesque natural setting.

Why carbon removal matters

Avoidance-based offsetting focuses on preventing future emissions, which doesn’t address the carbon that’s already warming the planet. Reducing emissions comes first, but it’s important we remember that removal is essential too. Carbon removal tackles emissions that are already in the atmosphere, which is critical if we’re going to reach net zero.

How Klimate select projects?

Klimate carefully evaluates every project across climate impact, social outcomes and environmental effects.

Social benefits
Projects can bring benefit, such as employment, skills and local economic growth, but they can also carry risks. Klimate assesses both to understand the full picture.

Environmental benefits
Beyond carbon, projects might also support biodiversity, soil health or air quality, or, if poorly designed, create environmental harm. Klimate only works with projects that meet strict standards.

How Climate Impact is assessed

Klimate evaluates projects using four core criteria:

Additionality – Would this project exist without carbon finance?
Permanence – How long is the carbon stored for?
Effectiveness – How efficiently does the project remove carbon?
Rapidity – How quickly does removal happen after emissions occur?

Balancing these factors helps build a portfolio that delivers real, lasting impact.

What projects does Explore support?

Together with Klimate, we support a portfolio of carbon removal technologies, from nature-based solutions like forestation to cutting-edge approaches such as Direct Air Capture.

Each technology has strengths and trade-offs. Some offer strong social and biodiversity benefits but shorter storage times; others lock carbon away permanently but are still emerging and expensive. Our portfolio will evolve as science advances and as our own emissions change.

Carbon removal and biodiversity

Many carbon removal projects can also support biodiversity like forestation and land restoration. Klimate assesses these co-benefits carefully and avoids projects that risk environmental harm. Most of our current investment supports projects that also help restore nature.

How much do we contribute?

We contribute to Klimate for every customer who travels with us. The amount depends on factors like trip length and distance travelled and it’s invested across multiple projects to create a balanced impact. We regularly review progress and share updates as our approach evolves.
